GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH & MONASTERY OF SHEPHERDS FIELD-BEIT SAHOUR (2 KM FROM BETHLEHEM).

An underground church built above the traditional (according to Greek Orthodox) cave of the shepherds who heard the angelic proclamation "Glory to God in the Highest, peace on earth, and good will toward men" at the birth of Jesus Christ (Luke 2:14). Local Christians call the site "Kaniseter Rawat", which means "place of the shepherds' shelter. The first church over the site was built by Queen Helena between 325-333 AD. It was replaced by a larger church, which was then destroyed in 614 by Persians. It and a monastery were rebuilt in the 7th century and survived until the 10th century.
