The famous place of the lots, Masada. Among the many inscriptions on pottery sherds excavated from the room, was the name of "Ben Yair", perhaps the short for Eleazar ben Yair, the commander of Jewish defenders of Masada as recorded by the 1st Cent. Jewish historian Josephus.

A total eleven small lots were uncovered, each bearing a single name.  It has even been suggested that the other ten names are those of the men chosen by lot to kill the others and then themselves, as recounted by Josephus.
