Abu Tor, Jerusalem -where the Tomb of Caiaphas (the High Priest who judged Jesus) was discovered.

Joseph son of Caiaphas was the Jewish High Priest (18-37 AD) mentioned in New Testament at the trial of Jesus (Mathew 26; Luke 3:2; John 11 & 18). He also appears while questioning Peter and John, in context with their authority to heal the crippled man (Acts 4) Abu Tor is a small village 2 km south of Jerusalem Old City, located along the border between East and West Jerusalem and currently with a mixed Jewish and Arab population. It was here in Abu Tor, that archaeologists in 1990 discovered a 2000 year old family tomb. Among the 12 ossuaries/bone boxes recovered, was one with the full name of Joseph Caiaphas ("Yehosef bar Kayafa"), written in Aramaic. In the ossuary were the bones of two babies, a adolescent child, a teenage boy, an adult woman, and a man about 60 years of age; all were later burried in Mount of Olives. Scholars believe that the first cent bones of the elder man belonged to the infamous Caiaphas. The beautifully decorated Caiaphas limestone ossuary is currently housed in the Israel Nation Museum, Jerusalem. The ossuary is generally accepted genuine and if indeed it belonged to Caiaphas the High Priest -it is a remarkable finding.
