Cardo Maximus -the ancient highway of Jerusalem from 2nd Cent AD.

The Cardo, was the main North-South street of Aelia Capitolina (connecting Damascus Gate and Dung Gate). Aelia Capitolina was the Jerusalem built by Roman Emperor Hadrian Ceasar in 135 AD. However, the following parts of Cardo Maximus in the Jewish Quarter are remains of the main street of Byzantine Jerusalem (6th Cent AD). During the Byzantine period, the cardo linked the two main Churches of Jerusalem: the new Nea church (built by Justinus/565-527 AD) and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The original width of the street was 73 feet, about the width of an eight-lane highway.
