The Greek Orthodox Church, Bethany.

The modern Greek Orthodox Church (1965) in Bethany stands at the site of a Crusader Church (12th Cent) built over the tomb of Lazarus. The Church incorporates a wall of the earlier Crusader church. As expected, the Greek Orthodox Church is not open for public frequently. Nearby are ruins traditionally identified as the House of Simon the Leper or the House of Lazarus. According to the Gospels ( Mathew26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; and John 12:1-8), Jesus visited the house of Simon the Leper at Bethany and here He was anointed by a woman with costly ointment. However, some identify these ruins with the home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus itself. The remains of a tower belong to the Crusader monastery (c.1144).
