Makhtesh in Hebrew is literally translated into "crater". The more technical term is "erosion cirque". These geological landforms are unique because they arise by millions of years of erosion processes that ultimately result in the formation of huge walls of rock encircling a deep closed valley. There are five Makhteshim in Israel and two more in Sinai, Egypt. Makhtesh Gadol is 40 km long and 9 km wide and is the largest crater after Makhtesh Ramon. More details later...
