Meshushim (Hexagon) Pool, Yehudiya Nature Reserve (Golan Heights)

Brechat HaMeshushim (Hebrew) or Hexagon Pool is a natural pool surrounded by unique hexagonal black basalt rocks. These rocks are formed by an unusual geological phenomenon. It is the most perfect example of volcanic hexagons found on earth. One can see hundreds of hexagonal rock columns, caused by the slow cooling of molten rocks in some 3 million years. The water reaches the pool from Meshushim River, the largest river in the Golan.

The Hexagon Pool is a part of the 16,500 acre spread Yehudiya Forest Nature Reserve in Golan Heights. The reserve appears to be quite large as eleven hiking trails are depicted in the official brochure, something you don't find in a single nature reserve. From the parking lot it was 45 minutes steep walk to the pool. I guess you need more than a day to visit the reserve extensively. The reserve is famous for its ancient Tabor oaks, forested valleys, waterfalls, streams, rivers, marshes, pools, canyons and ancient dolmens. There are five main rivers in the territory of the reserve -Meshushim, Zavitan, Yehudiya, Gamla, and Daliyot-each of the rivers offers a different kind of experience and difficulty level for nature lovers. No wonder why Yehudiya Forest Nature Reserve is one of the most popular hiking reserves in Israel.
