Capernaum Synagogue-where Jesus preached

"And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice. Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God" (Luke 4:33-34). It was while teaching in the synagogue of Capernaum that Jesus said, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day" (John 6:24; 53-54).

It is one of the largest Synagogues yet found in Israel. The synagogue (4th Cent AD) is made of white limestone, which was brought from quarries elsewhere. The usual material for the Galilee is black basalt. Interestingly, adjacent to this ancient synagogue of white limestone, one can see a foundation constructed of black basaltic stones. The foundation is dated to the first century AD and if so it is most probably the same synagogue where Jesus preached and cast out demons! Many scholars attribute this synagogue to the original structure built by the Roman centurion stationed there (Luke 7:3-5).
