From Quneitra Lookout, Golan Heights

Just a brief history. Keeping politics apart....Quneitra was the capital of Golan Heights under Syria. In 1967 during six-day war, Israel captured Quneitra. Six years later in 1973, Syria reconquered the city. Israeli counter attack measures resulted in regaining of the territory to Jewish hands. In 1974, Israel returned Quneitra to Syria. During these fierce battles and flip-flop transfer of the area, the entire city was devastatingly damaged.Today, Syria has left the ruins in place and built a museum to memorialize its destruction. Israel was heavily criticized by the International community for the city's destruction, while Israel has also criticized Syria for not rebuilding Quneitra.

From the lookout at Israeli side you can see the Syrian border and ruins of Quneitra. The white buildings you see below belong to the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and the region is a demilitarized buffer zone now.
