ALEXANDER NEVISKY CHURCH / ALEXANDER HOSPICE, JERUSALEM (RUSSIAN ORTHODOX)

This Russian Orthodox Church complex in Jerusalem, is renowned for having the ruins of the original 4th Century Holy Sepulchre of Christ. The area was acquired by Russia in 1859 and archeological excavations were carried out in 1883 by Archimandrite Antonin Kapoustin, Chief of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem. The major findings from the region include:

1. Remnants of the Judgement Gate (1st century BC, King Herod).
2. Remnants of an arch and two columns (2nd century AD, Hadrian Caesar).
3. Remnants of the Holy Sepulchre Church (4th century AD, Queen St. Helena)
4. The Eye of Needle

The funding came mainly from the Grand Duke Serge Alexandrovitch (1881) to accommodate pilgrims and hence also popularly known as "Alexander Hospice". Today it is the centre for Russian Orthodox mission in Jerusalem, The modern church inside the complex is dedicated to the 13th Cent. Saint Alexander Nevsky (1220-1263).
