The Eye of a Needle-Alexander Nevisky Church, Jerusalem

For the Russian Orthodox, this small opening is the "Eye of a Needle", mentioned by Jesus while describing how hard is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God".
(
Matthew 19:23-24, Mark 10:24-25 and Luke 18:24-25).

"When the Roman Iron Gates were locked at night, late travelers were allowed to come and leave only through a narrow opening near the Gate. This opening was large enough for a human being, but too small for pack animals to go through. Thus, a single guard could protect this entrance, hence known as the "Eye of the Needle."
