One of the most beautiful valleys in Israel, the Valley of Elah is best known as the site where David fought Goliath (I Samuel 17:2, 19; 21:9). The name Elah in Hebrew refers to a tree called terebinth (Pistacia palaestina) which still grows in the valley. Today, at Khirbet Qeiyafa, in the Elah Valley, archaeologists have discovered a fortified Judahite city from the Iron Age (1000–900 BC), substantiating the Biblical account of a Jewish monarchy in the region.
