Built in 1907-1910, this large complex (8 hectares) includes a hospital and a church with a 60 meter high bell tower. It was named after Empress Augusta Victoria, the wife of German Kaiser Wilhelm II, the last emperor to rule Germany (1888-1918). It was the first modern building in Jerusalem with electricity. The church known as the "Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Ascension", commemorates the ascension of Jesus from the Mount of Olives.
The complex was the Turkish army's headquarters during WWI (1914-1917). It was here in December 1917, Turks signed the papers of surrender of Palestine to the British General Allenby. During the years 1917-1927, the hospital building was the temporary HQ of the British forces in the Holy Land. Today, it is an Arab Hospital and the church is on the south side of the hospital. I would recommend the church for its beautiful interior and the nice views from its bell tower.
