These 50m tall massive pillars of sandstones which glows red in the sun are actually formed during the course of thousands of years of water and wind erosion. The name Solomon's Pillars was mistakenly given to them by the American archeologist Nelson Glueck, who investigated the copper-mines of Timna in the 1930s and believed the mines belonged to King Solomon (10th Cent BC). However, the mines were before King Solomon and were actually dominated by Egyptian rulers (14th-12th Cent BC).
