YAD VA'SHEM (Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority): Israel's national memorial to the 6,000,000 Jews murdered in the Holocaust.

Holocaust or Shoah refers to the systematic extermination of 6 million Jews in 6 years (1939 to 1945), by Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler. The word holocaust means "complete burnt offering to God" whereas Shoah in Hebrew means "calamity". Yad Va'Shem is Israel's national memorial to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust established in 1953. The words Yad Va'Shem ("yad"=memorial/hand; "shem"=name) are derived from a biblical verse in the book Isaiah. "And to them will I give in my house and within my walls a memorial and a name (Yad Vashem) that shall not be cut off" (Isaiah 56:5). Located on Mount Herzl and spread in an area of 45 acres, Yad Vashem houses, a central database for the names of 2.1 million Holocaust victims (keep on growing); Archives with some 74 million pages of Holocaust-related documentation and over 350,000 photographs; 46,000 audio, video, and written testimonies; documents of more than 22,000 non-Jewish individuals who saved Jews during Holocuast (awarded the title of Righteous Among the Nations). More details later.
