Alexander Zaid (1886-1938).

He was one of the founders of the clandestine Jewish defense organizations Bar Giora and Hashomer, which later merged into the modern Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Zaid worked here as a watchman, guarding the lands of the Jewish National Fund. It was Zaid's efforts that identified ancient Beit Shearim and brought the city into the limelight of modern archaeologists. Zaid was assassinated by Arab rioters in 1938. The bronze statue of Alexander Zaid on a horseback overlooking the Jezreel Valley is sculpted by David Polus.
