THE SYNAGOGUE CHURCH (12th Century AD) & THE GREEK CATHOLIC CHURCH (1887), NAZARETH. Traditional site of the synagogue where Jesus used to preach.

"And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?" (Mathew 13:54).

"And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read" (Luke 4:6).

"1 And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him. 2 And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing [him] were astonished, saying, From whence hath this [man] these things? and what wisdom [is] this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?" (Mark 6: 1-2).

The site is considered as the Synagogue of Nazareth where Jesus studied and prayed. Moreover, evidences seem to suggest the existence of a Synagogue here, that was reverred by Christians from the Byzantine Period (5th Cent AD). Later, Crusaders (12th Cent AD) converted the Synagogue into a Church. Today, the Synagogue Church is under the Melkite Greek Catholic Church. They have built a new Synagogue Church in 1887, adjacent to the traditional site of Synagogue.
