This house was 'Israel's Founding Father', David Ben-Gurion's (1886-1973) residence in Tel Aviv. The 2-story house was built in 1931. The second floor of the house with 4 library rooms and a bedroom was virtually the private kingdom of Ben-Gurion. The library has over 20,000 volumes in about 8 languages. It is said that Ben-Gurion has read most of them at an average speed of 3-4 books a week!
A Brief Biography: David Ben Gurion was originally born in Plonsk (Today in Poland) in 1886, in what was then Russia. He moved to Israel in 1905 at the age of 20. In Israel (then Palestine), he worked in orange groves and wine cellars and helped to establish the first Kibbutz. When WWI broke out, the Turks arrested him and David Ben Gurion fled to America. After the war was over, he returned to Israel and put all his life for the establishment of Israel-a wish that his people were dreaming through generations for 2000 years.
In May 14, 1948, when the modern 'State of Israel' was declared, David Ben Gurion became her first Prime Minister and Defense Minister (1948-1953). He held the same post for a second term again from 1955-1963. He resigned from these positions in 1963 stating personal reasons and later retired from politics in 1970. He spent his last years living in a modest home on the kibbutz Sede Boker. After his death in 1973, he was buried besides his wife Paula's grave in Sede Boker.
