Altar of the Grotto of Annunciation. The most important part of the Catholic Church of Annunciation, Nazareth.

The present altar is from 18th century only.

The ancient pillar or column towards the right side of the altar is dated by some to 4th Cent AD. It is shown sometimes as the exact spot where the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Virgin Mary and revealed that she will bear the Son of God.

The stairs behind the altar leads to a small cave called 'Mary's Kitchen'.

On the altar: the words "Verbum Caro Hic Factum Est" means "the word was made flesh" (John 1:14).
