Mevasseret Zion, located 8 km from Jerusalem was formed in 1963 as a Muncipal unit, by joining two local councils viz. Maoz Zion (1951) and Mevaseret Yerushalayim (1956). The name "Mevasseret Zion" in Hebrew means "Herald of Zion", derived from the Book of Isaiah (40:9) in the Holy Bible. Today, Mevasseret Zion is one of the richest Muncipalities of Jerusalem District.
